The Tortured Heart translated by Jeff Nagy

My glum heart drools on the poop…
My heart cured in tobacco-smoke!
They toss on it their spurts of soup,
My glum heart drools on the poop…
A general-butt for the jeering troop
Who shake with this contagious joke,
My glum heart drools on the poop,
My heart cured in tobacco-smoke!

Banana-dicked, the pollywogs
All insult and debauch him;
At evensong, they paint on walls
Some more salami-cocked cadets;
Oh you presto-changing waves,
Drown my heart, to save him!
Gorilla-schlonged, the cocky plebs
All insult and debauch him!

When their chewed-out wads are spat,
My stolen heart, how will you beat?
The bacchic swells will answer back
When their chewed-out wads are spat!
With peptobounds and gastroleaps
I’d choke back down this bloody sac!
When their chewed-out wads are spat,
My stolen heart, how will you beat?

(From the French of Arthur Rimbaud)
