Kokoy by Shane McCrae

I will Lord praise You now     for my friend Kokoy

Whom I was sure I just this morning saw / Walking unseeing toward me     on a slowly

Brightening sidewalk brightening after

a late autumn thaw     / The snow

Becoming what it always was

and never was and couldn’t be     / Water     then vapor

where it fell as snow

Died yesterday in the Philippines

And as he walked the man who wasn’t

Kokoy walked     / I saw he wasn’t     couldn’t be

the man I hoped he was     / And still he was     / And full

Of life and also his own life

I praise You for the man I didn’t know

and for the man I didn’t know I loved
